What Is a Hair Crown? Everything You Need to Know

TLDR

  • A Hair Crown is a ready-to-wear wig from Chelsey Smith Crowns that lets you change your hairstyle, color, and length in minutes without permanently changing your natural hair.
  • Hair Crowns are for everyone! Whether you're new to wigs or already have a collection, choosing the right size, cap construction, and style makes wearing synthetic wigs easy, comfortable, and FUN!

Hey, Crown Crew! 👑 It’s time to slay again.

If you're new around here, you might be wondering: what exactly is a Hair Crown? Well, it's a wig, but with a little more personality!

At Chelsey Smith Crowns, we call our wigs Hair Crowns because we believe great hair should be something you can put on, have fun with, and make your own.

Our ready-to-wear synthetic wigs let you change your look without spending hours at the salon or committing to a new haircut. Want gorgeous blonde waves on Monday and a sleek brunette bob on Friday? You can absolutely do that!

And here's something I want you to know right away: you don't have to be experiencing hair loss to wear a wig. Some women wear Crowns because they're dealing with thinning hair or hair loss. Others love the convenience of getting ready in minutes, or simply want to experiment with different hairstyles. There is no right or wrong reason to wear one!

What Makes a Hair Crown Different From a Regular Wig?

Our Hair Crowns are designed to make beautiful hair convenient, approachable, and fun.

We specialize in synthetic wigs, which means the hair is made from manufactured fibers rather than human hair. One of my favorite things about synthetic hair is that the style is already there!

Whether you choose curls, waves, or a straight style, you don't need to recreate that look from scratch every morning.

We also offer different cap constructions because everyone's preferences are different. Our classic lace wigs provide a familiar, more forgiving fit, while Swiss lace creates a finer, natural-looking hairline with a closer fit.

Monofilament caps are designed to create the appearance of a natural scalp, although they can feel a little more structured at first. We also offer features like CrownStay silicone grip technology and CrownContour hairline construction on select styles.

Not every Crown has the same features, so always check the product description. You can learn more about sizing, density, and construction in our Wig FAQ.

How Do You Wear a Hair Crown?

Putting on your first Crown might seem intimidating, but I promise it gets easier!

In my epic How to Wear a Hair Crown video tutorial, I walk you through everything from preparing your natural hair to adjusting your wig for a comfortable fit.

Start by securing your natural hair underneath a wig cap, if you prefer wearing one. Then place your Crown on your head and adjust the front hairline.

Many of our wigs have adjustable straps, combs, or removable security bands to help you customize the fit.

Some lace-front Crowns also require lace cutting before their first wear, unless you've selected our lace-cutting service.

In the video tutorial, I show you how to trim the lace carefully, along with a few of my favorite tricks from years of working as a hairstylist. And don't worry if you see a little shedding after cutting the lace. That's completely normal!

My biggest advice? Find what feels comfortable for YOU.

I don't wear an added security band every day, but I love having that option when I want a little extra hold. And you don't have to be an expert at braiding or wig styling to get started. A little practice goes a long way!

How Do You Choose and Care for Your First Hair Crown?

If you're shopping for your first wig, start with a style and color you already love.

Maybe that's a natural-looking blonde wig, a beautiful brunette Crown, or something from our colorful wigs collection.

Pay attention to the cap size, construction, length, and density. If you're new to wigs and want something closer to the fullness of natural hair, I often recommend starting with a lower-density style.

Taking care of your Crown is important, too!

I recommend using a wig brush or wide-tooth comb, depending on the style, and gently working through tangles from the ends upward.

Regular washing, proper storage, and the right products will help keep those synthetic fibers looking beautiful. Check out our Crown Care accessories for products to help maintain your wigs.

Ready to Find Your First Hair Crown?

One of my favorite things about Hair Crowns is the freedom they give you.

Maybe you're a busy mom who doesn't have 45 minutes to style her hair. Maybe you love fashion and want a different look for every occasion. Or maybe you just want to see what you'd look like with bangs without actually cutting them. Been there!

Whatever brings you here, I'm so happy you're part of our Crown Crew. Take your time, ask questions, and have fun finding a style that feels like you.

Good hair days shouldn't require an entire morning!
